What is a no-zone?

by | Jan 30, 2017 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

A no-zone refers to an area around the truck wherein the majority of accidents occur. All motor vehicles have no-zones, in passenger cars they are referred to as “blind spots.” No-zones are extremely dangerous because trucks are significantly larger and heavier than other motor vehicles, so any accident involving them almost inevitably results in severe injuries or fatalities. This post will discuss the four no-zones around tractor-trailer trucks (semi trucks or big rigs).

Trucks are surrounded by four no-zones: side, rear, front, and wide-turn. In 2014, 3,660 people were killed in truck accidents. The vast majority of the fatalities were not truck drivers. As you can see, it is important that you avoid these no-zones whenever possible.

The side and rear no-zones refer to the truck driver’s limited ability to see other vehicles in his mirrors. Big rigs sit very high up, so the side mirrors are often unable to catch objects that are directly next to the truck. Similarly, most big rig drivers are unable to see through their rear-view mirror because the view is blocked by the tractor trailer. For that reason, the driver relies on his side mirrors which are unable to catch objects that follow too closely behind. A good rule for trucks is if you cannot see yourself in the truck’s mirror, then the truck driver probably cannot see you either.

The front of the truck is a no-zone because semi-trucks need a lot of distance to slow down. Most people do not appreciate the size of these trucks and the effect that size has on slowing down and stopping. You should give trucks wide berth if you merge in front of them. Some collisions occur because passenger cars cut in front of trucks and do not give them sufficient time to slow down.

Finally, you probably noticed the “wide turn” signs on the rear wheel flaps on trucks.  Those signs are there for a reason, as you might guess. Trucks take very wide turns and many cars get caught between the truck and if the truck does not have enough space to complete its turn.

Were you injured in an accident with a truck? If you were, you may want to contact a lawyer to review your options. As stated above, these accidents invariably result in serious injuries, and you will need fair compensation to cover your medical bills and lost wages. An attorney can review your case and advise you of the best strategies to secure a settlement or judgment. You don’t need to go through this alone, a lawyer can help you.
